Beef Cattle Tetanus

Tetanus is a disease caused by Clostridium tetani. It can affect man, sheep, pigs, cattle, horses, dogs and goats. Following any injury e.g dog bite, tail docking, dehorning, tetanus can occur. There is a gradual onset of stiffness, developing into spasms which often gives the animal a characteristic appearance of rigidity in the ears, tail and gait. Up to 80% of affected animals die.

The only practical method of preventing clostridial infection from occuring and eliminating the risk by infection is by vaccinationv.

Treatment High doses of penicillin, tetanus antitoxin and supportive fluid therapy.
