Salmonellosis is an important disease of all animals (including humans). Clinically it presents as one of three syndromes:

  1. peracute septicaemia – sudden death from blood poisoning;
  2. acute enteritis – scours;
  3. chronic enteritis – scours and illthrift.

Prevention: Minimise stressors such as transportation, deprivation of feed or water, dietary changes and concurrent disease such as BVD virus. Maintain excellent standards of hygiene. Vaccination.

Treatment: Antibiotics, fluid replacement therapy.Early treatment of affected animals with antibiotic can save affected animals. This infection can spread to humans if care is not taken.
